Does my state have a COVID-19 vaccine app?

While we still have a long way to go before COVID-19 is a thing of the past, part of the way to get there is through vaccinations. Workplaces, restaurants and events are all safer when those who live in them are vaccinated. White cards that contain proof of this, however, can be easily misplaced. There are many ways to put this card on your phone, but some states also have specific mobile solutions that meet local requirements.

Here is a list of the ones we found; in some states, lawmakers and governors have moved to ban so-called vaccine passports. In those that do, some let you store a digital copy of your card in the app, some give you a digital copy you can save in other apps, and some give you access to a folder that says you’re vaccinated, which may or may not be accepted by a location or workplace. Regulations that affect digital recordings change frequently.

We’ll do our best to keep this list up to date, but if you want the latest version, chances are your state health department’s website has what you need to know.

Alabama

Alabama does not offer digital proof of vaccination. In May, Governor Kay Ivey signed legislation banning vaccine passports, the AP reports.

Alaska

Alaska does not yet have digital proof of vaccination but is working on it.

Arizona

Arizona uses MyIR Mobile.

Arkansas

Arkansas does not offer digital proof of vaccination. In April, Governor Asa Hutchinson signed a bill banning vaccine passports. (The state has also banned state and local mask mandates, which Hutchinson recently said he now regrets supporting.)

California

California has a statewide app. LA County residents (including Pasadena and Long Beach) who have received at least one dose of vaccine (regardless of vaccination location) and anyone who has received at least one dose in LA County (regardless of or their place of residence) also have access to Healthvana, which offers digital vaccination records.

Colorado

Colorado has the myColorado app, which can be set up using a Colorado driver’s license or state ID. It may take up to 24 hours after your shot for the information to appear.

Connecticut

Connecticut uses CT WiZ, which allows you to upload your recordings.

Delaware

In August, Dr. Karyl Thomas Rattay, director of the Delaware Division of Public Health, said residents could access vaccine information through his DelVAX web portal. But officials are “still looking for other approaches,” such as a smartphone app.

Florida

Florida does not offer digital proof of vaccination. In May, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a law banning, among other things, passports for vaccines.

Georgia

Georgia does not offer digital proof of vaccination. In May, Governor Brian Kemp issued an executive order prohibiting state agencies, service providers and properties from requiring passports for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Hawaii

Hawaii uses the Smart Health Card for fully vaccinated people who get vaccinated in Hawaii. It is compatible with Samsung Pay, the CommonHealth app and Apple Wallet if you have iOS 15.

Idaho

Idaho does not offer digital proof of vaccination. In April, Governor Brad Little signed an executive order prohibiting any state government entity from requiring vaccination passports to receive public services or access facilities.

Illinois

Illinois launched Vax Verify in early August. It uses Experian to verify identity, an approach criticized by some privacy experts.

Indiana

Indiana has offered electronic vaccination records since 2012 through MyVaxIndiana, but the myvaxindiana.in.gov website is currently offline and the help desk did not respond to questions.

Iowa

Iowa halted patient access to their own digital immunization records in response to a state law banning vaccine passports, which the governor signed into law in May.

Kansas

Kansas does not offer digital proof of vaccination. “I have no interest in vaccine passports,” Governor Laura Kelly said in April, the AP reported. “We will not publish those under my authority.”

Kentucky

Kentucky does not offer digital proof of vaccination. A Republican state legislator has moved to introduce legislation banning vaccine passports in the state.

Louisiana

Louisiana uses MyIR Mobile.

Maine does not offer digital proof of vaccination, and health officials say they have no plans for a statewide vaccine passport system. But those who received their vaccines at Northern Light Health can upload a SMART card vaccination record through the health system’s patient portal.

Maryland

Maryland uses MyIR Mobile statewide. And several counties have their own versions of VaccineCheck:

Massachusetts

Massachusetts will soon offer digital proof of vaccination, Gov. Charlie Baker told GBH News’ Boston Public Radio.

Michigan

The Michigan Immunization Portal allows you to download your immunization record from the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR). Republican lawmakers tried to ban vaccine passports this summer, but Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer is unlikely to support such a bill if it ever makes it to her desk. Those who received their vaccines at the University of Michigan Health can get digital proof through the health system’s patient portal.

Minnesota

Minnesota residents can use the Docket app once they register with the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection.

Mississippi

Mississippi uses MyIR Mobile.

Missouri

Missouri does not offer digital proof of vaccination. In June, Governor Mike Parson signed into law a bill banning local passports for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Montana

Montana does not offer digital proof of vaccination. In April, Governor Greg Gianforte signed an executive order prohibiting the state from funding vaccine passports.

Nevada

Nevada has Nevada WebIZ, which allows people to print an official record of their vaccinations.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire does not offer digital proof of vaccination.

New Jersey

New Jersey uses the folder. You will need the phone number or email address on file associated with your COVID-19 vaccination record.

New Mexico

New Mexico has Vaxview NM to view and print an official record of vaccinations.

New York

Statewide, New York has the Excelsior Pass, which produces a pass with a QR code that people can store in digital wallets. New York City also has the Covid Safe app (iOS and Android).

North Carolina

North Carolina has a COVID-19 vaccine portal that allows you to upload a vaccine record.
