Although the app doesn’t have a super sleek design, it is very functional and works well. With this kind of utility app, function is more important to me than design. There are only one-time charges for lifetime usage of the app. This is a great app to have in your library.
EASE OF USE
Know the destination of your link with certainty.
Have you come across a shortened link that looks like this – https://bit.ly/3Ga7E6N? There are many reasons why someone might want to shorten a URL link. Maybe they want to make the link easier to remember, or maybe they want to make it easier to share. Unfortunately, when you click on a shortened URL, you may not know where you will end up.
The link might redirect you to a malicious website that looks like a legitimate site. This is called phishing. Phishing websites can steal your personal information, such as passwords or credit card numbers. They can also install malware on your device. Malware can damage your device or steal your information.
You should therefore exercise caution when clicking on shortened URLs, especially if you do not know the sender. One thing you can do to protect yourself is to use an app to reveal the full URL, such as Link Unshortener.
Link Unshortener is an app for macOS that extends shortened web links as a result of redirects until it reveals the destination URL so you’ll never click on a link again without knowing where it’s going. The app was released 2 years ago by developer Jeff Johnson. It was written using Apple’s Xcode. Johnson has three other apps available in addition to Link Unshortener.
- Supports link shorteners such as t.co (Twitter), bit.ly, tinyurl, and more!
- Automatically removes URL tracking parameters.
- Automatically updates URLs from http to https.
- Includes a sharing extension.
- Includes Mac system service.
- The Dock icon accepts drag and drop links.
- Link Unshortener can be set as your default web browser.
- Custom web browser opening rules! Associate specific URLs with specific web browsers. Open https://docs.google.com links in Google Chrome and other links in Safari. Web URL rules are shared with StopTheMadness.
Price and availability
Link Unshortener is available in the Mac App Store for a one-time fee of $7.99.
Link Unshortener installs easily with one click from the Mac App Store. There are several preferences to go through that really make the app work the way you want it to. For example, you have the option to copy unshortened URLs to your clipboard or automatically open the unshortened URL, if you select those preferences in the app.
One of the most valuable preferences that most people will want to enable is the “Trim URL query” feature. You have the option to remove all extra code strings, known trackers or nothing. This feature will give you peace of mind that you are going straight to the intended URL and not being sent to a spammy or otherwise tracked site.
You have the possibility to shorten a URL directly from your browser (shared with the StopTheMadness Safari extension) or by copying/pasting it into the input field of the application. I had no problems with Link Unshortener working. I’m grateful for its usefulness as I frequently receive short URLs and don’t like visiting them blindly. Link Unshortener takes the guesswork out of it for me.
When browsing the internet, you can’t be too careful which links you click on. Link Unshortener ensures that you are informed of your destination. It is very easy to use and simple in its intended use. I really like that you don’t have any information saved in the app and it’s just a relay. Link Unshortener is very easy to use and convenient in everyday use cases.
