TikTok beats Google as the most visited website in the world in 2021

TikTok dethroned Google as the world’s most popular domain in 2021, ending the year with more traffic than the search giant. That was according to web security firm Cloudflare’s ranking of the best domains for this year, which has seen some interesting revamps.

The latest from Cloudflare Report on the year in review, via its Cloudflare Radar service, revealed that TikTok took the top spot from Google. For the music video platform, the ranking is up sharply from last year when it only landed in seventh place, with Google.com in the lead. It’s worth Google’s domain covering web activity on its other properties, including Maps, Translate, Photos, Flights, Books, and News.

TikTok also overtook Facebook as the most popular social media platform, with the latter taking third place in the ranking. Microsoft also lags behind Facebook, followed by Apple, Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, Twitter, and WhatsApp in that particular order.

The platform rose to prominence last year after the pandemic hit, with people stuck at home looking for entertainment through the TikTok app. In September he reported over a billion monthly active users and has even eclipsed Facebook as the world’s most downloaded app on mobile devices, including iPhones and Android phones.

Cloudflare said TikTok took the lead for a few days in February, March and May. However, the service secured the top spot most days after August 10. Cloudflare added.

However, the ranking may not be representative of the entire table. Cloudflare noted that its “ranking is derived from our public DNS resolver and therefore is not related to the number of users or unique visitors it receives per month.” This implies that the ranking is only part of the total traffic to these domains.
