TikTok has become a titan of social and viral content in 2021. So much so that the ByteDance-owned platform has overtaken Google as the most visited website of 2021.
Cloud Flare, a security company, released this year’s annual rankings. It has been discovered that Google has finally been spoofed as the most visited website by users around the world. Google now takes second place, opening the top spot to TikTok.
The 10 most popular domains of 2021 are:
- 1. TikTok.com
- 4. Microsoft.com
- 6. Amazon.co.uk
- 7. Netflix.com
- 8. YouTube.com
- 9. Twitter.com
In comparison, TikTok ranked number seven in the 2020 ranking. Although still very popular, TikTok sat behind websites such as Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Netflix and Amazon in seventh place. However, in just 12 months, TikTok’s popularity has escalated to the point where it can overtake each of the aforementioned websites.
CloudFlare’s data does not specify whether it includes traffic from Douyin, TikTok’s sister app, available in China. Additionally, the use of TikTok has been banned in India, which was once the world’s largest market for the app.
According to the data, the first day that TikTok held the top spot was February 17, 2021. It then fluctuated between March and May, gaining that spot again a few days during this period. However, on August 10, 2021, TikTok managed to hold that spot for most of the year, including Thanksgiving in the US and Black Friday.
It’s an impressive feat for TikTok in 2021. However, it’s a bit scary considering how popular and accessible Google is as a website. Google is a ubiquitous website that, for all intents and purposes, is the internet for many. However, I guess that can’t compete with TikTok’s one billion apparent monthly active users.
