Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security review: Excellent cloud-managed malware protection

Trend Micro offers an endpoint protection choice for every business: businesses that want to keep everything in-house can install Worry-Free Business Security Standard on their own server, while those that prefer a hosted solution can use this entirely server-based option. cloud.

It’s aimed at businesses with up to 250 devices to protect, and the price is right for SMBs. Annual pricing starts at £58 for two devices, rising to £520 for 25, with each license covering a Windows or Mac workstation, Windows server or mobile device.

All key safety features are present. Along with anti-malware scanning, you get web threat protection, web content filtering, client firewall, removable device controls, and mobile device security. A standout feature of the standard and cloud-hosted versions is an advanced data loss prevention module, which comes pre-configured to recognize (and optionally block) 244 different types of sensitive data, including UK financial and health information.

Ransomware is also high on Trend Micro’s radar. The software puts suspicious processes through a series of tests, including predictive machine learning, behavior monitoring, and detection of new programs. If the malware is not stopped immediately, the program can also directly detect malicious encryption attempts and undo any suspicious changes made by untrusted programs. .

As the name suggests, another goal of the Worry-Free suite is to simplify deployment and administration. The cloud portal is easy to use, with a dashboard that keeps you informed of all customer activity, detected security risks and policy violations. Clicking on any of the threat categories takes you directly to the portal’s log page, where you can quickly identify the type of threat and the customers affected.

The only place you might run into a problem is the initial client setup, as the email invitation process requires a standalone email client running on your local system. That’s not a huge hurdle, though: after logging in from a computer with Outlook installed, we were able to easily send email invitations to our Windows 10 users. The messages directed them to a small 7MB executable, and after running the installer, they had the agent running and connected to the portal in less than five minutes, with settings applied from the portal’s default groups for a instant protection.

Agents can then be manually moved into specific portal groups, each with custom policies. These define real-time and manual scanning behavior, apply predictive machine learning, and use one of three levels of web reputation to classify and block suspicious web pages. Optional global settings can be applied for malware scanning, approved and blocked websites (which override URL filtering policies), and password protection to prevent users from disabling the agent.

Data loss prevention can also be configured here. We created a policy to block all sensitive data, then tried using Gmail on a client PC to send an email containing a credit card number. The attempt was instantly blocked and logged, leaving Gmail complaining about a lack of network access.

Mobile protection is a mixed bag. Android devices get malware scanning, as well as access to web reputation service and password checks; If you’re using a Chromebook, you also get Web Threat Prevention. As usual, however, iOS options are much more limited. All you can do is apply complex unlock codes, set expiration limits, and enforce device lock timeouts.

Still, Trend Micro’s Worry-Free Business Security services offer excellent endpoint security, as well as outstanding DLP and anti-ransomware protection. For a small number of users, it’s good value for money, and SMBs will find the cloud portal very easy to use.
