Twitter an accelerator to realize my vision of a great app: Musk

New Delhi: Tesla CEO Elon Musk said buying Twitter was to fulfill his dream of creating a super app called X.com like WeChat in China that will be available to everyone around the world.

Responding to Chris Anderson, head of the nonprofit TED, Musk tweeted that “Twitter is an accelerator to realize the original vision of X.com.”

Anderson had posted late Wednesday that in about a year more people will be drawn to Twitter/X.

“It will be much less prone to robo-spam and algorithm-fueled outrage. Instead, it will offer many new features,” he said.

Musk, who has offered to buy Twitter for $44 billion, earlier floated the idea of making Twitter the next super app.

During a podcast in May, the world’s richest man said America needed a super app.

“It’s either converting Twitter into this or starting something new. It has to happen one way or another,” he noted.

“If you are in China, you kind of live on WeChat. He does everything. It’s a bit like Twitter, plus PayPal, plus a whole bunch of stuff rolled into one, with a great interface. It really is a great app, and we don’t have anything like it outside of China,” Musk told listeners.

The super app will serve as a “digital city square” that will allow users to leave comments and post videos.

In 1999, Musk co-founded an online bank called X.com, which was later merged to form PayPal.

Meanwhile, Twitter has received a letter from Musk to move forward with its initial $54.20 per share (or $44 billion) deal, and the deal is expected to close as the company’s trial nears. October 17.

Musk tweeted, “Buying Twitter is an accelerator to make X, the whole app. Twitter probably accelerates X by 3-5 years, but I could be wrong.
